Racing in Yorkshire
Racing is one of the most popular sports in the County attracting over one million racegoers every year. The origins of the modern thoroughbred can be traced back to Yorkshire with the original three stallions - the Byerley Turk, the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian - each having Yorkshire connections.
Racing in Yorkshire plays an important role in UK racing as a whole, staging many important races and throughout the year the nine Yorkshire Courses host over 170 meetings between them. With two major horse training centres at Malton and Middleham, along with other training locations and The Northern Racing College, the County sets the pace regarding producing equine stars, leading jockeys and stable staff.
The Strength, diversity and popularity of racing in the County acknowledges the truth behind the saying "Racing Matters to Yorkshire, and Yorkshire Matters to Racing."
